Explaining Domain (Transfer) Secret or Authorization (Auth) Code and How to Obtain it from your Current Registrar?

A Domain (Transfer) Secret or Authorization (Auth) Code is a code assigned by the Registrar at the time the domain name was Registered.
This Domain (Transfer) Secret acts like a password for a domain name, ensuring that only the owner of the domain can Transfer their domain name.

To Transfer any domain name, of any of the following TLDs (extensions), you would require to first obtain the Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code from your Current Registrar:

Note
  • Authorization Code for a .EU domain name will have the format XXXX-AAAA-BBBB-CCCC where XXXX is a plain-text identifier of the current Registrar, and AAAA, BBBB and CCCC are blocks of 4 random characters (letters and digits) separated by dashes.

The Authorization Code is generated upon request from the Registrar and is valid for a period of 40 days. Each time the code is requested, a new one will be generated on the spot, replacing the previous one and remaining valid for 40 days.

Requests submitted during the first day (24 hours from the moment of first request) of the validity period of the code will not result in a new code being generated. The request will return the same code with the same remaining validity period.

    Example:

The first request for an Authorization Code is made on 15 Dec 2012 11.00 AM GMT. An Authorization Code will be generated with a validity of 40 days. All further requests for the code within the next 24 hours (16 Dec 2012 11.00 AM GMT) will return the same code with the same remaining validity period. Requests after the initial 24 hours will return a fresh Authorization Code.

Authorization Code associated with a .EU domain name will become invalid immediately after use.

  • In case of a .NZ domain name, the Registry directly assigns a code known as Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI) upon Registration. The Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI)
is required for authentication during the Transfer of a .NZ domain name from one Registrar to another.

Ideally, your domain name's Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth Code should be available within the Control Panel provided by your Registrar. In the event that you
are not able to locate your Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth Code, you need to contact the Support Team of your Current Registrar, to obtain the same.

Locating and Modifying the Domain (Transfer) Secret/Authorization Code for a Domain Name

Most TLDs (Domain Name Extensions) have a Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code (known as Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI)
for .NZ domain names) associated with them. This serves as a password and is required to authenticate domain name Transfers.

Exceptions

Note

The following TLDs do not support Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code
(Anchor: authcode):

  • .AT

  • .ES

  • .RU

  • .UK

  • .WEB.IN

also allows you to modify your Domain (Transfer) Secret for each domain name. You can, thus, have a Domain (Transfer) Secret
of your choice for each domain name.

To Set/View a Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code for .DE domain names

  1. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name whose Domain Secret you wish to view/modify and proceed to
the Order Information view. See details

  2. Click the Domain Secret link.

  3. Here, you can set/view the Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code.

    • Setting the Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code: Provide a new Domain (Transfer) Secret in the textbox and click the Update
      Domain Secret
      button to set it.

    • Viewing the Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code: Once you have set a Domain (Transfer) Secret it will be displayed here until 30
days. After this period expires, you will need to set a new Domain (Transfer) Secret by following the abovementioned process.

    Caveats

    Note
    • The Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code for a .DE domain name expires in 30 days after setting it. Thus, this interface will prompt you to set a new
Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code, unless you have generated it.

    • In case of an expired .DE domain name, its Order Information view will display the message -

      Attention

Your domain has expired. Any Services dependent upon the domain will not work.

Here, you need to first click the Remind me Later link and then the Domain Secret link.

    • The length of the Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code of a .DE domain name can be from 8 to 255 characters.

    • A .DE domain name's Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code can not contain the following characters:

      • I (uppercase i)

      • l (lowercase l)

      • O (uppercase o)

      • o (lowercase o)

      • 0 (zero)

      • 1

    • If you have set a Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code for your .DE domain name and then within 30 days and prior to Transferring Away your domain
name, if you modify the Registrant Contact details of your .DE domain name, the Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code gets nullified. You need to reset the Domain (Transfer) Secret
/ Authorization Code if you still intend to Transfer Away your .DE domain name to another Registrar.

To View/Modify a Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code (except for .DE domain names)

  1. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name whose Domain Secret you wish to view/modify and proceed to
the Order Information view. See details

  2. Click the Domain Secret link.

    Expired Domain Name Related Information

    Note

In case of an expired domain name, its Order Information view will display the message -

    Attention

Your domain has expired. Any Services dependent upon the domain will not work.

Here, you need to first click the Remind me Later link and then the Domain Secret link.

  3. Here, the current Domain (Transfer) Secret will be displayed. In order to change it, provide a new Domain (Transfer) Secret in the textbox and click the Update Domain Secret
    button to set it.

Domain Name Extension Specific and Other General Conditions

    Note
    • Domain Secret character limit for different Domain Name Extensions

    • While modifying the Domain Secret of .COM, .NET, .NAME and .JOBS domain names, the following rules apply:

      • The length of the Domain Secret can be from 8 to 32 characters only

      • The Domain Secret must contain 1 alphabet, 1 number as well as 1 special character.

    • The Domain Secret should ideally consist of alphanumeric as well as special characters like the ones mentioned below:

      • A -Z and a - z

      • 0 - 9

      • ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~

However, certain TLDs do not support usage of special characters in the Domain Secret:

      • .ME: No special character. Only alphanumeric characters permitted.

      • .UK: No special character. Only alphanumeric characters permitted.

      • .WS: & '

    • In case of a .COM, .NET, .WS domain names the Domain Secret field may be blank. In order to set it, provide a new Domain (Transfer)
Secret in the textbox and click the Update Domain Secret button.

    • In order to set a new Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code for a .EU domain name, you need to click the Fetch Latest Token button.

      • The Authorization Code is generated upon request from the Registrar and is valid for a period of 40 days. Each time the code is requested, a new one will be generated on the spot, replacing the previous one and remaining valid for 40 days.

      • Requests submitted during the first day (24 hours from the moment of first request) of the validity period of the code will not result in a new code being generated.

      • Authorization Code associated with a .EU domain name will become invalid immediately after use.

    • In order to set a new Domain (Transfer) Secret / Authorization Code for a .NL domain name, you need to click the Fetch Latest Token button.

    • In case of a .NZ domain name, you can not choose a Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI) of your own. The Domain Secret page will display a link to modify the
Domain (Transfer) Secret. Clicking the same will generate a new Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI) automatically.

    • In case of a .SHABAKA domain name, the Domain (Transfer) Secret must be between 8 - 32 printable ASCII characters with at least a punctuation, letter and a digit.

    • Once a domain name having an associated Domain (Transfer) Secret / Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI) is Transferred
to from another Registrar, a new Domain (Transfer) Secret / Unique Domain Authentication ID
(UDAI) is set for such a domain name. This process is implemented from a security perspective.

Confirming if a Domain Name can be Transferred

There are various cases where a domain name may not be transferable to another Registrar. This could happen in the following circumstances:

  1. Domain name is less than 60 days old: If the domain name you are trying to Transfer was registered less than 60 days ago, the request will
get rejected by the Registry itself.

  2. Domain name has been Transferred less than 60 days ago: A domain name can not be transferred to another Registrar within 60 days
    of a previous Transfer.

    Example:

A domain name can not be transferred from Registrar B to Registrar C, if it has been transferred to Registrar B from Registrar A within the last 60 days.

    Exception

    Note

An exception to this rule is, the Transfer back to the previous Registrar in cases where both Registrars so agree and/or where a decision in the dispute resolution process so directs.

  3. Theft Protection / Lock / Suspension has been applied on your domain name: If Theft Protection / Lock / Suspension has been
applied on your domain name at the Current Registrar, then a Transfer for that domain name to another Registrar will not be allowed. You will first have to disable Theft Protection /
Lock / Suspension for the domain name and then proceed with a Transfer.

Disabling Theft Protection / Lock / Suspension

  4. Privacy Protection has been enabled on your domain name: If you have enabled Privacy Protection for your domain name, then you need
to disable it, before trying to transfer it.

    Disabling Privacy Protection

  5. Domain name is in the Redemption Grace Period or in the Pending Delete status: If the domain name is in either of
these statuses, it can not be transferred.

Domain Name Extension Specific Conditions

Note
  • To Transfer .AU (Anchor: dotau) domain names, the following restrictions do
    not apply:

    • Domain name is less than 60 days old

    • Domain name has been Transferred less than 60 days ago

    • Privacy Protection has been enabled on your domain name

    • Domain name is in the Redemption Grace Period

  • A .CN domain name can not be transferred if there are less than 15 days to its Expiry. Moreover, the 2nd condition (mentioned above) will not be applicable
    for a .CN domain name.

  • Only .CO, .COM.CO, .NET.CO, .NOM.CO domain names can be transferred.

  • If you Transfer Away your .DE domain name to another Registrar, you will lose the benefit of the remaining term of your .DE domain name.

    Example:

If you have registered myname.de on January 11, 2011, then the Expiry Date of myname.de is January 27, 2012. If however, you choose to Transfer Away this domain name on September 1, 2011 to
another Registrar, then you will not receive refund for the remaining term ie. from September 1, 2011 to January 27, 2012.

  • If you are transferring your .DE domain name to , you have to ensure that Name Servers are visible in the Whois of your domain name,
prior to transferring your domain name to us.

Your .DE domain name Transfer will fail if there are no Name Servers displayed in your domain name's Whois.

    Additional Information

    .DE Whois Server

  • If you are trying to Transfer a .EU domain name, none of the conditions mentioned above will be applicable. This is because the .EU Registry does not support any Theft Protection / Lock / Suspension / Privacy Protection feature. There is also no 60 day Registration/Transfer Lock.

Moreover, you may also Transfer a .EU domain name which is in the Redemption Grace Period.

  • Third Level .ME domain names can not be transferred since Registrar Me-Net See details is the
only Registrar through which Third Level .ME domain names can be registered/managed. However, no such restriction applies to Second Level .ME domain names.

  • Only the fifth condition mentioned above will be applicable for the Transfer of a .NL domain name. This is because the .NL Registry does not support any Theft Protection / Lock / Suspension / Privacy Protection feature. There is also no 60 day Registration/Transfer Lock.

  • The only circumstance where a .NZ domain name can not be transferred is, when it is less than 5 days old or has a Lock applied by the Registry to it.

  • The following restrictions apply for a .RU (Anchor: dotru) domain name:

    • Upon modifying the Contact details of a .RU domain name, you can not Transfer your domain name, until the below mentioned duration:

      • .RU, .NET.RU, .ORG.RU: 30 days

      • .COM.RU: 60 days

    • 2nd Level .RU domain names have a 30-Day Transfer Lock placed on them after they are Transferred from another Registrar.

3rd Level .RU domain names can not be Transferred among Registrars.

    • If your .RU domain name has Expired, then you may not Transfer your domain name until it has been renewed.

  • The first two conditions mentioned above will not be applicable for the Transfer of a .SX domain name. This is because the .SX Registry does not support 60 day Registration/Transfer Lock.

  • A .UK domain name can be renewed upto 90 days after its Expiry, post which the domain name would be automatically deleted by the .UK Registry. There is no restriction on
transferring a .UK domain name during this period. However, you need to ensure that there is sufficient time prior to Deletion, so that the domain name can be renewed with the new Registrar
once the Transfer process gets completed successfully. This is because Transfer of a .UK domain name does not include one year Renewal.

Apart from this, none of conditions listed above apply to the Transfer of a .UK domain name. This is because the .UK Registry does not support any
Theft Protection / Lock / Suspension / Privacy Protection / 60 day Registration or Transfer Lock and there is no concept of a Redemption Grace Period in case of a .UK domain name.

  • .WEB.IN domain names can not be transferred.

Transferring a Domain Name

  4. Click the Submit button. This will display the Whois of the domain name.

From a Reliable Third Party Whois Provider

When using any third party Whois website, you need to ensure that you understand the following:

  1. When verifying the Registration details of .COM/.NET domain names, no Third party Whois site will be able to display accurate Whois details until up to 24 hours after Registration. This is because other providers need to first query the concerned Registry's Whois Servers to acquire the Whois Server URL of the Sponsoring Registrar (before querying the Registrar's Whois Server for complete Whois details) and the Registry's Whois Server itself updates its records in that much time.

  2. When verifying the Registration details of any other domain name extension (like .INFO, .ORG, .BIZ, .IN, .US), the Registry itself stores all the Registration details and any Third party Whois directly queries the concerned Registry's Whois Server for such details. Ideally, the Registry's Whois Server should publish/update this data in every 5 to 10 minutes.

  3. Most Third party Whois sites cache results from the previous results of the queried domain names and may misguide you.

    Note

When you wish to have a Third opinion of a particular domain name's Registration details, we advise you to instead use
    https://www.drwhois.com.

Managing Contacts from within the Customer Control Panel

Domain Name Contacts may be created and managed independent of domain names as well, directly from within the Customer Control Panel.

More About Contacts

Note
  • The Contact details of a domain name is typically modified from the Order Information view of individual domain names.

  • Unused Contacts (except Default Contacts) that were created more than six months ago are archived. Archived Contacts will not appear in the List of Contacts, would not be searchable and will not be available for selection during domain name registration and transfer.

    Additional Information

    Default Contacts

  • You can not manage .RU Contacts from the Customer Control

    • Modifying any information of the Registrant Contact for a .NZ (Anchor: nzaddrules)
domain name will result in the change(s) being applied to all .NZ domain names using this Contact. This will also
result in a new Unique Domain Authentication ID (UDAI) being generated for each affected domain name.

    • While the system permits adding multiple Contacts with the same Name, Company Name, Address, etc., it is not recommended, as it may lead to confusion while
registering domain names and/or managing Contacts in the future.

  4. Click Add to complete the process.

Contacts thus added can be viewed from the Contact List page which can be accessed by pointing to Settings -> Domain Specific -> Contacts Management in the Menu, and then clicking List. This Contact can be chosen to represent one or more type of Contact for a domain name during the
Registration process.

Contact Modification, Accented Characters and Domain Name Extension Specific Conditions

Note
  • Modifying the details of a particular Contact in this way will result in change of Contact details for all domain names using this Contact.

  • You will encounter the below error message in case the Contact is associated with one or more suspended domain name(s):
